I'm not trying to protect yesterday
I grew up alongside the internet. I've delivered across design, UX, engineering, SEO, performance, security, hosting, infrastructure, and more.
I grew up alongside the internet. I’ve delivered across design, UX, engineering, SEO, performance, security, hosting, infrastructure, and more.
The list goes on. But it was never a career plan. I had problems to solve, so I had to learn.
One problem at a time.
How experience builds
experience builds recognition - exposure to repeating problems helps you spot the patterns. Recognising these patterns then helps you predict future outcomesBut one problem at a time often unfurls multiple things you need to understand. Then you start to see patterns. And experience means you start to reapply knowledge because you can see even deeper patterns.
Living with change
Standing still in agency, in technology, has rarely been an option. Change is the constant, but when change accelerates, it is incredibly destabilising.
But it can also be incredibly exciting.
What comes next
Maybe I won’t have a human team in the future. Maybe I’ll be overseeing an agentic team. Or maybe I’ll be overseeing the people who are overseeing agentic teams.
These will be new skills I will need to develop to maintain my relevanceand to keep learning.
Do I ever wake up in the middle of the night and worry about it? Yes, of course I do. But I’ve done that for the last 25 years — so, to be honest, AI hasn’t changed that.
I’m not trying to protect yesterday.it would be pointless I’m trying to create tomorrow.
